|World Chess Cup 2013 Tromso|
The FIDE World Cup is one of the highlights of the chess calendar – a month of intense knockout action that uses 7 quick-fire rounds to whittle 128 players down to one. At stake is not only a cool $1.6 million prize fund ($120,000 for the winner) but qualification for next year’s World Championship “Candidates” tournament – a chance to earn the right to a match against the World Champion, either India’s Viswanathan Anand or Norway’s own Magnus Carlsen.

11 August Sunday 15:00 Round 1 – Game 1 Scandic Hotel
While those two players will be deep in preparation for their match in India this November the line-up for the World Cup in Tromsø is set to be spectacular, featuring the world numbers 2 and 3, Levon Aronian and Vladimir Kramnik. Although they’ll be the favourites when the games start on August 11 if there’s one thing the World Cup can be guaranteed to provide it’s surprises!
The official website of the World Chess Cup is now online. You can access it at: http://www.chessworldcup2013.com/
Two Years Ago
Victory in the 2011 FIDE World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk was a career-best performance for Peter Svidler. The six-time Russian Champion didn’t lose a game as he overcame Fabiano Caruana, Gata Kamsky, Judit Polgar, Ruslan Ponomariov and Alexander Grischuk on his way to the title.

Polgár Judit előadása és Almási Zoltán szimultánja Zalakaroson

|
A Zalakaroson, a Hotel SPA-ban edzőtáborozó Polgár Judit a helyi Móra Ferenc Általános Iskolában tartott előadást az iskolai sakkoktatás aktuális kérdéseiről, bemutatva a rendelkezésre álló könyveket és egyéb segédanyagokat, Almási Zoltán nagymesterrel pedig ez idő alatt a sakkot kedvelő gyerekek mérkőzhettek meg. Mindkét program nagy sikert aratott, melyen részt vett Novák Ferenc polgármester is.
PJ az elmúlt években már többször hangsúlyozta, hogy a profi sakk mellett egyre nagyobb energiát szentel a játék népszerűsítésének is világszerte. Ez alkalommal pedagógusoknak tartott Smartboard interaktív táblás prezentációt a képességfejlesztő sakkoktatással kapcsolatos elképzeléseiről, ötleteiről. „A sakk népszerűsítése során szeretnék segítséget nyújtani az ezen a területen kevesebb tapasztalattal rendelkező tanároknak a sakk játékos és szórakoztató módon történő oktatásáról, hiszen ez a nagyszerű stratégiai játék egyben EGYEDÜLÁLLÓ OKTATÁSI ESZKÖZ is, amellyel nagyon hasznos a gyerekeknél a különböző kompetenciák fejlesztésében. „ – mondta Judit. Az eseményt a Smartboard Company magyarországi képviselete az LSK Hungary szervezte. Az Interaktív Kool-Túra :: országos információs körút szezonzáró, budapesti állomásán Polgár Judit díjakat adott át a kifejezetten sakk témában kiírt interaktív táblás pályázat győzteseinek

The Tal Memorial will be among the various elite events that will gather the strongest players in the world, after the Alekhine Memorial and the Norway Chess tournament.
This will be the second tournament in a row, after the one in Norway, where World Champion Viswanathan Anand will play against his challenger Magnus Carlsen. They will be joined by ex-world champion Vladimir Kramnik, who was very close to the victory at the Candidates Tournament. The big absence will be Armenian Levon Aronian, however, he will play in both the Alekhine Memorial and Norway Chess. It is also noteworthy the presence of the challenger of the last World Championship match, Boris Gelfand, who will be looking for chances to demonstrate that he is still in shape to battle at the highest level. The field of ten players will be completed with Russian hope Sergey Karjakin, Dortmund winner Fabiano Caruana, American star Hikaru Nakamura, Azerbaijani Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, crowd-favorite Alexander Morozevich and current Russian champion Dmitry Andreikin.
The traditional circular grandmaster super tournament;Tal Memorial; will take place in Moscow from 12 to 24 June 2013. Organizers of Tal Memorial released the list of 2013 participants.

Karjakin will continue his busy schedule at the Tal Memorial, which begins next week.Karjakin started the third playing day with a win. He caught Veselin Topalov in the lead thanks to his victory over Sergei Zhigalko. The eventual champion turned around an inferior position in a Ruy Lopez. Zhigalko handled the tactical early middlegame accurately and got a pawn advantage, but was not able to follow through and fell victim of Karjakin’s active play on the kingside. Meanwhile, Peter Leko quickly held Topalov to a draw with the black pieces. The Hungarian simplified to an opposite-colored bishops endgame and signed the peace treaty on move 24. Given Leko’s good play in the second day, Topalov might have decided to avoid any unnecessary risk in this

Ivanchuk – Giri 5 – 7 Jun 2013, Leon (Spain)
Creativity and good management against the financial crisis. That is the motto for the Ciudad de Leon organizers. Its 26th edition will be a clash of generations, a very attractive match: Vassily Ivanchuk (44 years old) and Anish Giri (18).
The format is a new one: “Total Chess”, with two classical games (although somewhat accelerated) on Friday (June 7th), four rapid on Saturday and ten blitz on Sunday. As usual, the parallel activities will also be interesting. Chess is really important in Leon. After 25 consecutive years of success, the risk of cancellation was there, because of the terrible financial crisis in Spain.

Quang Liem is the new World Blitz Champion

|
The results of the World Blitz Chess Championship were known on June 10th at the Ugra Chess Academy in Khanty-Mansiysk. Sixty chess players from eighteen countries fought for the title of World Blitz Champion.
Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi and Vietnamese Le Quang Liem were leading after the first day. Both Grandmasters had 12 points each, but the distance from the competitors was not very big: half a point behind was Ruslan Ponomariov from the Ukraine. Also, very close to the leading chess players, there was a group of players such as Alexander Grischuk, Ernesto Inarkiev and Rauf Mamedov.
|
At the beginning of the second day, Le Quang Liem was ahead of the pack, and he managed to keep this advantage until the end of the event. However, before the last round, Ruslan Ponomariov came very close to the Vietnamese grandmaster. A victory over Sergey Movsesian (Armenia) in the last round brought the gold medal to Le in the World Blitz championship. Ponomariov made a draw in the last round against Gabriel Sargissian.
Grischuk, Nepomniachtchi and Ponomatiov finished the championship only half a point behind the winner. The silver medal went to Alexander Grischuk, while the bronze one went to Ruslan Ponomariov. Final standings below.
The World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship took place on 6th – 10th June in Khanty-Mansiysk. The World Rapid Champion was known on 8 June; Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (AZE) won this event after a tremendous last day. Silver and bronze went to Ian Nepomniachtchi and Alexander Grischuk, respectively.
The prize fund of the championships amounted to 400 thousand US dollars and was divided between both tournaments equally.
The Vietnamese star mentioned in an interview that, after Khanty-Mansiysk, he will participate in the Asian indoor games – chess is included in the program. Later, he will play in the World Cup in Tromso.

It seemed close to impossible after the first two days, but Ian Nepomniachtchi lost his two-points advantage and gave up first place at the World Rapid Chess Championship in Khanty-Mansiysk. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov had an amazing final day, as he won all his five games to finish on 11.5/15 and get clear first place in this strong event.
Alexander Grischuk arrived as the pre-tournament favorite and had a good final day to end up in sole third place. The Russian even had a decent theoretical shot at winning the event in the last round. If he won his game against Ernesto Inarkiev and both Mamedyarov and Nepomniachtchi drew, he would have gotten the crown. However, this is not what happened and the Azerbaijani got the title.
Vietnamese star Le Quang Liem showed good chess all throughout the tournament, only losing against the gold and silver medalists. He finished fourth with 10/15 points.
Ten players finished on 9/15. Two 2700+ rated are in this group: Nikita Vitiugov and Rauf Mamedov. Dmitry Andreikin seemed like a strong candidate to finish at the top of the standings, but also finished in this big group. He will be playing the very demanding Tal Memorial next week in what might become his rise to the elite.
The strong line-up left some strong players disappointed with their results. Gata Kamsky, Ruslan Ponomariov and Alexei Dreev had good chances to finish in higher positions, but culminated in the middle of the standings table with 8.5 points. All of them will have a chance to go for first in the blitz event that begins tomorrow. Full standings below
